Gbarnga, Bong County – A devastating storm has left Dorothy Cooper Elementary, Junior & Semi High School in urgent need of repairs, prompting a call for immediate intervention from both the Liberian government and humanitarian organizations.

The government-run institution suffered severe structural damage when strong winds completely de-roofed the school building, forcing classes to a standstill and creating a difficult situation for students and staff.

Speaking on the matter, Mr. J. Elijah Deniah, Chair of the school’s Program Department, expressed deep concern over the impact of the disaster, describing it as a major setback for education in the area.“This storm disaster is a significant hindrance to our students’ education,” Deniah lamented. “Without urgent intervention, their learning experience and overall well-being will be severely affected.”He added that the school administration lacks the financial resources to rebuild, making external support crucial for restoring normalcy.

Beyond appealing to government and humanitarian organizations, Mr. Deniah is urging parents and community members to take action.“Parents are the direct beneficiaries of this institution, and they must step in now instead of waiting solely for government assistance,” he emphasized.

The violent storm, which hit Gbarnga and surrounding areas on January 24, 2024, also destroyed numerous homes, leaving many families homeless and seeking shelter with friends and relatives.

Victims of the storm have described their situation as distressing and humiliating, with many now appealing for essential relief supplies, including:
• Zinc sheets
• Nails
• Cement
• Food supplies
• Other critical materials

As the school administration and affected residents await support, the need for swift intervention from the government, NGOs, and well-meaning individuals grows increasingly urgent.

With education disrupted and families struggling to rebuild, the situation in Gbarnga demands urgent attention to prevent further hardship for students and residents alike.
